Jeremy Till | Agência Espacial, Além do Fountainhead

A palestra apresenta os temas desenvolvidos por Jeremy Till ao longo dos últimos cinco anos nos seus premiados textos. Jeremy sempre defendeu que a arquitetura deve abordar questões para além de sua auto-referenciada caixa preta, para redescobrir sua finalidade social e ética. A palestra parte de um olhar sobre os mitos da arquitetura, como estes foram retratados por Ayn Rand no livro Fountainhed (em português o livro foi traduzido como A Nascente e o filme como Vontade Indômita), um texto profundamente político, mitificado imprecisamente como a representação do arquiteto como herói solitário. É a negação da política que, Jeremy defende, separou a arquitetura como profissão das questões urgentes do mundo. Através da idéia de "agência espacial", a palestra irá explorar novas áreas onde a inteligência arquitetônica pode ser implantada, levando a um papel expandido para arquitetos no século XXI. Jeremy Till
Jeremy arquiteto, educador e escritor. Ele é diretor da Central Saint Martins e vice-chanceler da University of the Arts London. Sua extensa obra escrita inclui os livros Flexible Housing, Architecture Depends e Spatial Agency, todos ganhadores do RIBA President’s Award for Research. Como arquiteto, trabalhou com Sarah Wigglesworth Architects em seu prédio pioneiro, 9 Stock Orchard Street.

SPATIAL AGENCY: BEYOND THE FOUNTAINHEAD
This lecture will explore the themes that have been built up in Jeremy Till's award-winning writing over the past five years. He has consistently argued that architecture must address issues beyond its self-referential black box if it is to rediscover its social and ethical purpose. The lecture starts with a look at the myths of architecture as portrayed through Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, a deeply political text but one that has been mythologized uncritically as the depiction of the architect as lone hero. It is the denial of the political that, Till argues, has separated architecture as profession from the pressing issues of the world. Through the idea of 'spatial agency', the lecture will explore new areas where architectural intelligence might be deployed, leading to an expanded role for architects in the twenty-first century. Whilst known for his critique of the norms of architectural practice, Till’s lecture presents a productive vision of how spatial agency might work to re-envision new spatial, and thus social, futures.

PROFESSOR JEREMY TILL
Jeremy Till is an architect, educator and writer. He is Head of Central Saint Martins and Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of the Arts London. His extensive written work includes the books Flexible Housing, Architecture Depends and Spatial Agency, all three of which won the RIBA President’s Award for Research. As an architect, he worked with Sarah Wigglesworth Architects on their pioneering building, 9 Stock Orchard Street.
